  1. Peel the potatoes and onions. Slice the potatoes very thinly, slice the onions to a similar thickness, and grate the cheese.
  2. Preheat the oven to 200 C. Grease a 24 cm pie dish with some of the margarine and melt the remaining margarine.
  3. Arrange one third of the potato slices in overlapping circles in the dish. Season lightly with salt and pepper. Add half of the onion slices, a handful of grated cheese, and half of the melted margarine.
  4. Add another third of the potatoes and season lightly. Add the remaining onion, another handful of grated cheese, and the remaining melted margarine.
  5. Top with the remaining potato slices. Season with salt and pepper, spoon over the cream, and sprinkle with the remaining grated cheese. Bake on a lower oven rack at 200 C for about 40 minutes until nicely browned.
